Prescott High School Automotive Classroom & Shop
Background: Following 50 years of wear and tear, the flooring system for the auto shop classroom at Prescott High School, located in Prescott, Arizona, was in serious need of an upgrade. The 5,800-square-foot area had a number of cracks and was pitted from decades of use. The new floor needed to be easy to clean with improved aesthetics.
Contractor: Schaefer Garage Floors (Garage Floors and More) is a specialty floor coating installer serving Central and Northern Arizona with both residential and commercial applications. Owner John Schaefer has been using APF products since 2009.
The System: Based on the school’s need, Schaefer Garage Floors opted for the Poly 100 Thin Film System. This system consists of Epoxy 100 as a base coat and Epoxy 300 Flex as a build coat to improve the impact resistance of the floor. Next, Poly 100 UV in Delta Fog was put down with a light broadcast of Granitex chips for aesthetics. Lastly, the floor was finished with Poly 100 UV Clear.
The Process: Schaefer Garage Floors was given a four-day window to complete the job before the school year was back in session. In addition to this, they decided to do the work in two phases so expensive auto equipment would not need to be moved outside and risk damages.
Schaefer began with shot blasting and hand grinding the floor. Next, the team repaired expansion joints, cracks and pits with Epoxy 300 Flex, then ground flush. After the first phase was complete, Schaefer substituted the Epoxy 100 base coat for Epoxy 200, which is a fast cure, water-based primer. This allowed the workers to prime and apply the build coat within the same day and stay within the four-day window.
