Diverse Use of Resinous Flooring Systems at Sporting Venues
by Daniel Owen - R&D Leader, Specialty Flooring
Over the past decade, resinous flooring and architectural concrete surfaces have secured a foothold in sporting areas. And why shouldn't they? Our products are attractive, durable and easily customizable to fit the design needs of each venue. Here’s a quick look at where these resinous flooring products are most effective:
Concourses: In recent years, I’ve seen several sporting venues opt for resinous flooring systems in their main concourses, typically with vinyl paint chip, metallic epoxy, epoxy colored quartz, or dyed and polished concrete. All of these systems offer unlimited design options. Combine that with superior durability, and it’s a no brainier.
Restrooms: Here we typically see epoxy color quartz or vinyl paint chip flooring systems. They are used for their non-slip properties, and due to the fact that they are seamless, they have an inherent advantage over tile in the sanitation department.
Concessions: The most common flooring systems for the food preparation and service areas are urethane mortars or epoxy colored quartz floors. Again, since they are both seamless floors with integral cove bases, they offer improved cleanability when compared to quarry tile.
Locker Rooms: Here we mainly see epoxy colored quartz floors, used for their inherent slip resistance and good aesthetics.
Team Shops: These areas can run the gambit. I’ve seen almost every type of decorative flooring system used, from polished concrete to metallic epoxies to polymer concrete. Again, our flooring systems are superior because we provide customizable design options.
Seating Areas: While these areas are much less likely to use our products, I have seen it done, mainly on renovation projects. These floors will typically get a thin film epoxy coating with a polyurethane finish coat.
Pedestrian Ramps: These areas typically receive epoxy sand broadcast floors and occasionally epoxy colored quartz or vinyl paint chip floors. The main function of these flooring systems is slip resistance, stain resistance and cleanability.
