Sand Screens On Concrete
Posted on 1/21/2010 in New Application TechniquesDecorative Concrete

Sanding the concrete as a means of prep prior to staining with Acid based stains is a subject that I felt should be addressed since I have recently come across a couple of different cases. One was from visiting a job site and the second was from a tech call that recently came through.
.
It is important to understand that going across the concrete with a 60/80 grit sand screen is perfectly fine to help clean the concrete but not to open up the concrete.  This is especially true on really dense, (tight, burnished). power troweled or even blackened, walking/steel troweled concrete.

Although you do not acid wash the surface for an Acid Stain, I feel that you still have to put some minutes in aggressively cleaning the concrete using a floor machine and a nylogrit brush. This method of scrubbing the floor, along with a good all purpose cleaner is very effective in getting deep into the cream of the concrete. Then you can go across the surface with a sand screen to help clean and remove any residue left from dry wall, compound, glue and paint and subsequently even out patching materials.

In my professional experience, this is the best way to clean and prepare your concrete surface prior to applying an acid based stain.  Just remember that simply sanding the concrete doesn't necessarily prepare it fully for the application process, you may just have to take it that step further.
